Surveys

Boat Survey & Sport Boat Survey

We deliver independent boat surveys for sport, motor and sailing boats — for pre-purchase, after damage, for valuation or insurance. "Boat survey" is the everyday term; in practice it covers the same scope as a yacht survey.

    Boat survey vs. yacht survey

In practice, "boat survey" refers to any survey of a sport, motor or sailing boat carried out by an independent surveyor. Buyers of larger vessels often speak of a "yacht survey", while "boat survey" is the more common term for sport boats and trailer boats below ~12 m.

Methodically, both surveys are identical: type, construction, propulsion, age and purpose drive scope — not the label. We combine visual inspection, function tests, measurements and full documentation review into a written report.

    Typical reasons

Most assignments come from concrete decisions:

    • Buying or selling a boat (pre-purchase / sales survey)
    • Damage assessment after grounding, collision, fire, theft, water ingress
    • Valuation for financing, inheritance, separation, export
    • Insurance survey at policy start or after a claim
    • Pre-season or pre-passage condition check

    What our boat survey covers

A full boat survey documents hull, deck, propulsion, electrics, steering, safety and comfort equipment and all documentation (ownership, registration, CE conformity, maintenance). On GRP boats we add a moisture survey below the waterline, on steel and aluminium boats ultrasonic hull thickness measurement.

You receive a written, photo-documented report with condition classification and — if commissioned — a substantiated value indication, usable directly in negotiations, insurance or yard talks.

    Nationwide reach

Our surveyors operate from several German bases and travel regularly to the North Sea, Baltic, Lake Constance, the major inland waters and DACH neighbours. We come to the boat — yard, marina, trailer, private berth.

    Frequently asked questions

What does a boat survey cost?
Costs depend on type, size, scope and travel. A standard pre-purchase survey of a sport boat is typically in the low-to-mid four-figure range. You receive a written cost indication before commissioning.
    How long does it take?
On-site inspection of a sport boat typically takes half a day to a full day. The written report follows within 5–10 working days after the survey and full document set.
Do I need a survey for insurance?
Many insurers require an up-to-date survey from a certain age or value — both at inception and in case of a claim. We deliver insurance-grade reports.
Is "boat survey" the same as "yacht survey"?
Functionally yes. The methodology — hull, propulsion, electrics, equipment, documents — is identical; the label depends on vessel size and common usage.
